How to make your computer's drives invisible?

Ever wish that you could make one of your computer's drives invisible to anyone snooping around on your system? haha, whether you have sensitive docs, pictures, or any other files, this is one of the easiest ways to keep them safe.

You'll still be able to access your hidden drives; you just won't see that they exist in Windows Explorer or the My Computer folder.

CAUTION: Back up your registry before you start the steps below!

Note: The simple way to backup registry is to use System Restore. Windows Me and XP users can create System Restore points, which back up all data (including the Registry) so you can restore your system to that precise state. You should run System Restore manually before you make major hardware or software changes or try to work with the Registry. Click Start, Programs ( All Programs, in XP), Accessories, System Tools, System Restore, choose Create a restore point, click Next, and follow the directions.

After backing up registry, you can start:

1. Open Regedit.

2. Navigate to one of these strings:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer - this only changes the settings for the current logged in user

HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsCurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer - this changes the settings for all users on the machine. You may have to create the key folder "Explorer" manually.

3. In the Explorer key folder, create a new DWORD value by right-clicking Explorer, then choosing New DWORD value. Name the value "NoDrives" (without the quotes). This value defines local and network drive visibility for each logical drive on the computer. All drives will be visible as long as this value's data is set to 0.

4. Following the table below, enter the decimal number corresponding to the drive(s) you want to hide as NoDrives value data. When you right-click on NoDrives and choose Modify, make sure you select Decimal base, not Hexadecimal.

If you want to hide more than one drive, you simply add the drive amounts together for a combined total.

For example, to hide the D:/ and T:/ drives, add the decimal value for the D:/ drive to the decimal value to the T:/ drive.

8 (D) + 524288 (T) = 524296

To disable all of your visible drives, set the value to 67108863.

Trojans target unpatched IE flaw

Two exploits that use the recently disclosed vulnerability were reported by antivirus company Sophos on Friday. Called Clunky-B and Delf-LT, the exploits could allow malicious code to be executed remotely on a user's PC.

Microsoft issued an advisory last week, on "the way Internet Explorer handles mismatched document object model objects". Systems running Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows XP Service Packs 1 and 2 are vulnerable to attack. Machines running Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Me and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 are also vulnerable to the exploits.

Microsoft is not due to issue another round of security patches until 13 December. Some security experts have suggested the company should roll out an unscheduled patch before this time to address this flaw. However, it's not clear whether the flaw will even be addressed in the next Microsoft security bulletin.

The Skype 2.0 software offers the ability to see as well as hear computer-to-computer callers — provided that both parties have webcams.

With the Skype 2.0 update, the picture is far clearer, larger and more stable. So much so that this may be the long-awaited application that brings video telephony to the masses, especially now that webcams can be bought for as little as $30.

Version 2.0 — which so far is available only for Windows PCs — retains the Skype desktop contact list that can be used to store information on people with whom you regularly Skype (like Google, the name has reached the status of a verb). If someone on your call list has the updated software and a webcam plugged in, a little video camera icon shows up beside his or her name. You double-click the name and, if your call is accepted, you'll see in a few seconds live video of the person you called, and that person will see you.

The audio quality, always good on Skype, remains excellent — sometimes better than even on a land-line phone.

For some reason, adding video brings a bit more humanity into a conversation, even if it's basically a business call. For one thing, you have to be on better behavior; it's probably harder to make a cutting remark if you are face to face.

Nevertheless, the image is hardly perfect, even when both parties are using fast Internet connections. There is a general haziness to the images, and the picture quality washes if the chatter is in low light. Movement causes some pixelation.

Korean firms can help with e-government

KUALA LUMPUR: South Korean companies are willing to help Malaysia turn its e-government initiative into reality.

Bob Chua, chief executive director of iPark Singapore, said Malaysia could learn a lot about implementing e-government from South Korea.

South Korea has effectively implemented e-government and is the world leader in e-government services, he said. “It has been ranked No 1 by the United Nations.”

iPark is an agency that promotes the South Korean information technology industry. It has a regional office in Singapore to facilitate its activities in South-East Asia.

Chua was in Kuala Lumpur to attend the annual iPark forum here recently. It is the third such forum in this country to help forge partnerships between local IT companies and their Seoul counterparts, with the aim of developing the Multimedia Super Corridor's seven flagship applications. E-government is one of the applications.

According to Chua, Malaysia has the technology to implement e-government but its people need to be more tech-savvy.

He said the main factor for South Korea's successful implementation of e-government is its high number of educated and tech-savvy people.

“South Korea has an educated workforce that is very inclined to technology,” he said. – JO TIMBUONG

ASTRO All Asia Networks plc has committed some RM300mil over the next five years to bring in new locally produced channels to the market as part of its continuous plans to expand its services.

Chief operating officer David Butorac said these channels, which would include in-house productions, would cover various genres from entertainment to education.

The satellite television provider was not threatened by competition from other players including the free-to-air television operators, as it concentrated on growing its own business, he said.

Last year, Astro's investment for locally produced channels was about RM100mil.

“We're still seeing strong growth in both our subscriber numbers and revenue and we expect that to continue,” he told reporters after the launch of a new channel service for Astro interactive in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Astro is the process of finalising the setting up of a facility in Cyberjaya, which will give it the capacity to launch these new services.

Over the past nine years, it has invested some RM5bil, of which RM2bil was used to subsidise the cost of in-home equipment or set-top boxes for its 5.5 million subscribers.

On its new channel service, Butorac said it would allow Public Bank Visa cardholders to download exclusive offers or TV coupons onto the card via Astro's interactive channel.

“Cardholders can download the coupons, known as Astro Interactive TV-Coupons, from the current 10 merchants, through the unutilised smart card reader of the Astro decoder by tuning to Channel 800 and following the simple instructions,” he said,

The card has a special smart card application to store the coupon information in its chip and is protected by its security functions.

The cardholder can then take his card and visit participating outlets to redeem the vouchers, which include discount vouchers for products, hotel stays and other offers.

Astro expects the service, which is the first in Malaysia, to boost its current TV advertising revenue of 7%.

Public Bank Bhd card services general manager Chong You Lin said currently there were 500,000 PB Visa cardholders and the number was expected to rise to 550,000 by the year-end.

Presently, this new channel service is only available to PB Visa cardholders.

BMW invested RM25 million at Cyberjaya

BMW Group has invested RM25 million todate in its group data centre (GDC) in Cyberjaya to help the company achieve its target of selling 150,000 cars in the Asia Pacific region by 2008, its chief information officer and executive vice president Juergen Maidl said.

The GDC, which began operations in June 2003, provides financial services, telephony, local area network management, virus protection, call centre infrastructure and webhosting to the group’s divisions in the Asia Pacific region, Russia and South Africa.

Speaking to reporters at a press briefing in Cyberjaya yesterday, Maidl said the GDC, which handles a car business volume of 135,000 annually, operated various department-specific application functions including sales and marketing and production assembly and manufacturing.

He said the GDC was a critical component of BMW’s business strategy that relied on a strong information technology (IT) infrastructure to align its global divisions with the overarching business strategy. BMW has two other GDCs in Germany and the US.

Maidl said Asia was emerging as one of the fastest growing regions for BMW in terms of sales growth. As of last year, BMW was the number one selling premium brand car in Asia.

In Malaysia, it sold nearly 2,400 cars in 2004 and as of September 2005, it had sold that same amount giving it a 20% lead over its nearest competitor in the premium brand category.

In tandem with the growth, Maidl said BMW had added new subsidiaries and assembly plants in the region, and the GDC in Cyberjaya ensures these new subsidiaries and assembly plants received appropriate IT infrastructure to BMW application systems.

He added the GDC had also benefited the company’s customers as it distributed the latest software to BMW service centres as modern BMW cars came equipped with sensors and central processing units.

“So when a customer brings his or her car in for servicing, if required, the firmware on the car is automatically updated and the functionality of the components can be enhanced,” Maidl said.

Public Discussion by MDC

The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC) is holding a walk-in public discussion on Malaysia's draft Creative Commons licences this month.

It will take place at Universiti Malaya's Tun Suffian Auditorium, from 8.30am to noon, on Oct 26.

This will be the first time the event is open to the public; the three previous discussions were by invitation only.

MDC had on March 29 signed a collaboration agreement with Creative Commons, a San Francisco-based non-profit organisation, to adapt its licences to suit the Malaysian context.

The Creative Commons website enables copyright holders to grant some of their rights to the public while retaining others through a variety of licensing and contract schemes. Its intention is to avoid the problems that current copyright laws create for the sharing of intellectual property.

The Creative Commons Malaysia community project is hosted by the MDC, which plans to launch it at year-end.

Among the issues that will be up for discussion is moral rights under the Copyright Act 1987 which prevent others from presenting a person's work without attribution or with incorrect attribution, even after that person's death.

Another is whether copyright holders can exclusively waive their right to collect fees and royalties, either individually or through representatives and performance rights societies.

Creative Commons is said to be more suitable for digital works, which can be easily duplicated and modified, especially with today's remix culture – where someone might rip a CD track and modify it digitally on a computer.

Multimedia Development Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDC) to start trial run of WiMAX soon.

THE WiMAX broadband technology will be implemented on a trial run in Cyberjaya and Putrajaya at the end of this month.

MDC chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohamed Arif Nun told StarBiz yesterday that the trial run, which would cost less than RM3mil, would be completed at the end of the year.

WiMAX, which is regarded as an improvement over the WiFI technology, is capable of providing cost-effective wireless access to users at a range of several kilometres.

Putrajaya Taxis To Use Coupon System

Koperasi Pengangkutan Awam Putrajaya Berhad Chairman M. Shariff Yousof Shah said the coupon system would come into force in October at the latest.

For a start, the system would be introduced in Putrajaya Sentral at Precinct 7 which houses the Ekspres Rail Link (ERL) station, he told reporters after a function to affix Jalur Gemilang on Putrajaya and Cyberjaya taxis here Tuesday by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk M. Kayveas.

Shariff said the coupon system would be similar to the one being practised in Kuala Lumpur and at KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang.

He said legal action would be taken against taxi drivers found to be not using the system.

Shariff also said the cooperative was buying Proton Waja which would be made official taxis in Putrajaya.

"We propose to use light blue colour for the taxis which will become part of the identity and image of Putrajaya," he said.

The taxi drivers have been asked to wear vests bearing their names to facilitate passengers to lodge complaints if they committed an offence, he added.

THIRD-generation (3G) mobile content provider, Bill Adam Associates Sdn Bhd, has signed a deal with Celcom (Malaysia) Bhd to provide music video downloads to the mobile operator.

Celcom 3G users will be able to download Top 10 songs in specified genre and from countries like Malaysia, UK and US.

Bill Adam’s president Mohd Taufik Abdullah said the roll-out is expected to be in September.

“We offer products, which is music downloads, that are in demand in any part of the world. We just need to customise them and present the top 10 to the customers,” he said in an interview in Cyberjaya recently.

The music clips can also be downloaded via its Gstream.tv portal. However, the download price has yet to be confirmed, Mohd Taufik said.

Though the firm’s revenue is solely dependent on the 3G users market, he said one of the 3G mobile operators in the country had once projected 100,000 3G subscribers by year-end and the company hopes to capture 10 per cent of the market.

Bill Adam spends about RM1 million for research and development.

Chief executive officer Amir Mohamed said the company is currently in talks with both Celcom and Maxis Communications Bhd on the upcoming contents like live telecast of events and concerts.

“Another feature is a map on all the train tracks, including Light Railway Transits, KTM Komuter and Express Rail Link (ERL), in Klang Valley though the initial roll-out will be on ERL passing through Putrajaya,” he said.

He said the Ministry of Health has also expressed interest in the hospitals tracking content.

The feature is able to show information, images and maps on all the private hospitals and government specialists centres in the country.

Amir added that Bill Adam is also in talks with mobile operators in Dubai and UK.

Oracle Corporation has launched a centre of excellence for e-Governance at its Cyberjaya office in Malaysia.

The centre at Century Square, Cyberjaya which will see RM10mil of investment from Oracle Malaysia over the next three years, will work on prototyping and showcasing solutions. The Cyberjaya centre will invite masters degree and doctoral candidates to come and work there, hopefully bringing about exchanges of viewpoints and ideas which will lead to better solutions that can be made available internationally. It will also lead the way in developing comprehensive e-Government solutions not just in Malaysia but also around the region.

Winning Imagine Cup Malaysia 2005 competition

A team comprising four software engineering undergraduates from Multimedia University (MMU) emerged champions in the Imagine Cup Malaysia 2005 competition.

The competition is a technology contest that provides an outlet for students to explore their technological and artistic interests outside the classroom, according to organisers Microsoft Corp.

The students won, thanks to their RFID (radio frequency identification) and handheld device-based Object iDentification Information Network (Odin) application.

They will go on to the final round of the competition, to be held in Yokohama, Japan, from 27 July to 2 Aug.

The four students – Chuah Shang Jun, Ooi Wen Fong, Saw Kee Leng and Tan Boon Siang – said they were driven to develop Odin by the idea that “posters, plates, vending machines and much of everything else” would come with RFID tags in the future.

Pantech Co of Korea has launched a new 2-Mpixel camera phone, aimed at providing the optimal combination of camera and phone technologies, with a modern design for young, trend conscious consumers.

According to Sung-Kyu Lee, president & CEO of Pantech, the PG-6100 phone a clamshell design is aimed at early adopters keen to embrace new fashions, styles and trends.

The PG-6100 features an MP3 player, photo caller ID, WAP 2.0 and Java technology, Bluetooth functionality and a voice memo system. It also features a 2-Mpixel CMOS camera. The internal display is a 1.9-inch 260k TFT, and the external display is a 260k OLED. The PG-6100 weighs less than 100g and measures 80 x 47 x 24.9mm.

Many multinational companies have realized the benefits of “outsourcing” and “off-shoring” to the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC), at the heart of which is Cyberjaya. World-class companies like Shell, HSBC, Ericsson, Fujitsu, NTT, DHL, British-American Tobacco, Prudential, Standard Chartered Bank, EDS, IBM, Nokia, Western Union, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Satyam, Unisys and BMW are among the long list of companies that have regional data-processing or customer-service centers in Malaysia, mostly within the MSC. These companies see Cyberjaya as an emerging regional outsourcing center.

The MSC is also attracting technology of an advanced kind. Like Motorola’s Malaysia Software Center, which began operations in mid-1999. The Center’s domain of excellence includes software applications and network management solutions in 2G, 2.5G and 3G Wireless Communication Systems, and embedded test software applications for portable wireless devices as well as for automobiles.

Motorola (Malaysia) employs more than 250 software engineers, of which over 98 per cent are Malaysians. Managing Director S Surya says, “Fifty percent of the engineers we employ have had foreign education. Malaysian engineers graduated from countries like Australia, U.K, and even IITians from India have come to work here.” He adds that the employee turnover is less than 10 percent, which makes it a good proposition to set up R&D base in Malaysia.

Even Japan’s giant NTT is developing software and content for third-generation mobile phones out of its R&D center at Cyberjaya. “90 per cent of the 75 engineers at our development center are Malaysians. Accreditation & Recognition of MMU Programmes

For Professional Programmes like Engineering and Accountancy, MMU seeks recognition from the respective professional bodies. The relevant professional bodies are as follows:

i) Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM)
ii) Malaysian Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA)

Recognition by these Professional Bodies is necessary to enable graduates from the programmes to gain professional recognition. Graduates in possession of an unrecognised degree can not be registered with these Professional Bodies.

MMU has also gained recognition from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), UK in addition to the MICPA recognition.

Meanwhile, recognition from JPA is necessary to enable graduates to be employed in the Public/Government sector. Without JPA's recognition, graduates can only gain employment in the private sector. In this regard, MMU's programme that has been accredited by LAN shall be forwarded to JPA by LAN itself. The list of programmes submitted by LAN will be considered in the JPA's 'Jawatankuasa Tetap Penilaian dan Pengiktirafan Kelayakan (JTPPK)'' which is the government's committee to decide on granting the recognition.

THE value of a good IT infrastructure lies not in how much it costs but in what it can do to influence the culture of its users, according to computer hardware giant Sun Microsystems Inc.

John Gage, the company’s chief researcher, said that merely investing in hardware and software products will not be sufficient to transform a society into an innovative and entrepreneurial one.

That is why there are high hopes for the country’s newly-built Java Technopreneur Development Centre in Cyberjaya. “It is a place that will encourage technopreneurial activities and build a culture for a knowledge-based economy,” Gage said.

He was speaking at the launch of the centre last week. It was jointly developed by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC) and Multimedia University (MMU).

The RM1mil development centre is part of an ecological system aimed at nurturing entrepreneurial talents, Gage said.

The centre provides infrastructure support, Java training, and business development guidance to promising technopreneurs utilising Java-based technology. It will focus on key technology areas such as embedded systems, intelligent systems, wireless and mobility and advanced software.

“Java is a great tool for technopreneurs to develop secure, robust and useful applications, which will help improve people’s lives all over the world,” Gage said.

The 2,700sq ft centre is located at MDC’s Central Incubator-Accelerator Centre inside MMU’s Cyberjaya campus.

Cheam Tat Inn, managing director of Sun Microsystems Malaysia, said the centre will serve as a platform to promote collaboration between local and international enterprises.

MMU president Prof Dr Ghauth Jasmon said locating the centre close to the campus would certainly benefit students, as the university was “fully committed to the teaching of Java in our engineering and IT courses.”

Undergraduates from other disciplines could also be roped in to work on a part-time basis at the centre, allowing them to gain valuable practical experience in the process, he said.

MDC vice-president Dr Wilson Tay said many final year students have commercially viable ideas for their final-year projects. “With mentoring, they can translate their ideas into reality,” he said.

PUTRAJAYA, June 15 2005 (Bernama) -- In an effort to establish Malaysia as a net exporter of ICT products and solutions, Sun Microsystems Inc has opened its first Java Technopreneur Development Center in Malaysia to boost the country's Information Communications Technology (ICT) agenda.

Sun Microsystems Malaysia Sdn Bhd's managing director, Cheam Tat Inn, said the new centre in Putrajaya would support local ICT initiatives in creating a critical mass of technology entrepreneurs and nurturing world-class IT companies.

Jointly developed with the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC) and the Multimedia University, the centre is the fruition of several months of planning, programme roll-outs and trial runs under the Java Technopreneur Development (Jtrend) Programme.

The centre, through the Jtrend Programme would serve as a platform to promote collaboration between local and international enterprises to develop products and solutions using Java and open standard technologies, Cheam said at the launching of the centre, here Wednesday.

He said the centre through the Jtrend Programme, will not only help develop technopreneurs who are skilled in Java technology, but will go a long way toward establishing Malaysia as a producer.

The Java Technopreneur Development Centre is situated at the Multimedia Super Corridor Central Incubator - Accelerator (MCIA) Centre, which are part of Sun's Asean Java Competency program and MCIA's Acceleration Technology Labs programme, which was initiated in 2003.
