PS3 is confirmed to be released in 2006 and to support multiple OS

Ever since PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) was presented to the public at the Los Angeles Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May 2005, PlayStation fanatics have been eagerly awaiting the launch of the next generation computer entertainment system. The new games console is due for release in Spring 2006. Thanks to full backwards capability, gamers will still be able to enjoy their PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games on the new model.

With its enormous processing power, the next generation PlayStation is more reminiscent of a super computer than a typical games console. The PS3's piece de resistance is its new multi-core 3.2 GHz Cell processor. The Cell was developed jointly by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba and is supported by a 256 megabyte XDR memory.

The Cell enables an astonishing two teraflops of computing power which will help give future games the visual quality you expect from a movie. Sneak previews of the highly anticipated PS3 games Motorstorm™, Killzone™ and FORMULA ONE™ promise spectacular graphics.

"Empowered by the Cell processor with super computer like performance, a new age of PLAYSTATION 3 is about to begin," declared Ken Kutaragi, President and CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
The PS3 should serve not only as a games machine but as a computer with a multitude of possible applications. For example, photo and video editing are standard PC applications which the PS3 will feature, according to a recent interview which the PlayStation boss gave to Japanese PC magazine Impress PC Watch.

Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PS3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB. It remains to be decided whether the standard version of the PS3 will come complete with a hard drive. The operating system has also yet to be clarified. The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger).
